Irene didn't want to pick Chimchar at Rowan's laboratory, thinking he was ugly, but she didn't really like the sleepy Turtwig who Kene took anyway, and Shiro was faster in picking Piplup. She then felt sorry for the Chimchar, as she realized she was only judging him for his appearance, and decided to give him a chance.
Zathael wasn't really hurt for this, as he was aware he was not cute or cool looking, but his personality is what totally conquered Irene. He is an amazing mix of cute, silly and loyal, and as an Infernape he hasn't changed a single bit.
